Viceroy Bali Achieves Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) Certification

Ubud, Bali | 19 June 2026 – Viceroy Bali is proud to announce that it has become one of  the first properties in Ubud to achieve certification from Global Sustainable Tourism  Council (GSTC), a globally recognised benchmark for sustainable travel and tourism.  This milestone reflects Viceroy Bali’s long-term, ongoing commitment to responsible  luxury, environmental stewardship, cultural preservation, and meaningful community  engagement.

The GSTC establishes and manages global standards for sustainable travel and tourism,  providing a framework for businesses to measure and improve their sustainability  performance across four key pillars: Sustainable Management, Socioeconomic Benefits,  Cultural Heritage Preservation, and Environmental Responsibility.

For more than two decades, Viceroy Bali has embraced a philosophy of delivering  exceptional guest experiences while preserving the natural and cultural environment that  makes Bali, and Ubud particularly, so unique. Achieving GSTC Certification formally  recognises the hotel’s commitment to operating responsibly, continuously improving the sustainability practices, and creating positive impacts for guests, team members,  community, and environment.

This certification reflects the collective efforts of the team across a wide range of  sustainability initiatives, from supporting local communities in the surrounding areas of  the hotel, and preserving Balinese culture to reducing the environmental footprint and  strengthening responsible business practices. Further details, achievements, and  measurable outcomes can be found in the hotel’s latest Sustainability Report.

“Achieving GSTC Certification is an important milestone for not just all of us at Viceroy  Bali, but also the wider communities in which we share both privilege and responsibility through operating in Bali.” said Patrick Farrell, General Manager of Viceroy Bali.

“While we are proud of this recognition, we see it as a continuation of our journey rather  than a final stop. Sustainability influences many of the decisions we make every day, from  how we operate the resort to how we support our local community and protect the natural  beauty that surrounds us. Being the first in Ubud to obtain this certification reinforces our  commitment to responsible luxury and inspires us to continue improving for the benefit  of our guests, our team, and future generations.”

As a proudly independent, family-owned luxury resort in the heart of Ubud, Viceroy Bali remains committed to creating meaningful experiences while ensuring that the operations contribute positively to Bali’s environment, culture, and communities. GSTC  Certification represents another important step in that ongoing journey.

Viceroy Bali GSTC Certified

GSTC Certified
Global Sustainable Tourism Council

Certified June 2026 | Among Ubud’s First

Responsible Luxury, Globally Recognised

Viceroy Bali is one of the first properties in Ubud to earn GSTC Certification, a globally recognised benchmark for sustainable travel and tourism.

Viceroy Bali - GSTC Certified

ABOUT THE CERTIFICATION

What is GSTC Certification?

A globally recognised framework that measures and improves sustainability performance across the tourism industry.

The Global Sustainable Tourism Council establishes and manages the world’s standards for sustainable travel and tourism. Its certification provides a rigorous, independent framework that evaluates properties across key areas of responsible tourism.

The assessment conducted by Control Union, a GSTC-accredited certification body, included documentation reviews, interviews, supplier assessments, and on-site audits. The evaluation recognised Viceroy Bali’s performance across the four pillars of GSTC Certification.

Sustainable Management

GSTC evaluates how sustainability is embedded within an organisation’s governance, policies, and daily operations. At Viceroy Bali, sustainability is supported by clear policies, measurable objectives, dedicated sustainability representatives within each department, weekly sustainability meetings, and ongoing team training. Regular internal and external audits help ensure compliance with environmental, labour, and workplace safety standards and drive continuous improvement across the resort. Sustainability has been integrated into the resort’s development since its inception and remains a guiding principle in both strategic planning and daily operations today.

Socioeconomic Benefits

A key pillar of GSTC Certification is ensuring tourism creates meaningful value for local communities. At Viceroy Bali, 37% of team members come from the local village of Petulu, with the remainder from neighbouring communities. Beyond employment, the resort supports local schools, partners with regional suppliers and craftsmen, and showcases handcrafted products by Balinese artisans in our boutique. Guests are also invited to engage with local culture through experiences that support local practitioners and traditions, helping generate lasting benefits for the surrounding community.

Cultural Heritage

Protecting and celebrating local heritage forms an important part of the GSTC framework. At Viceroy Bali, respect for Balinese traditions is woven into everyday life. Team members observe a longstanding tradition of wearing Balinese dress every Thursday, while Hindu traditions and daily rituals continue to shape life throughout the resort. We also support local religious observances, temple ceremonies, and Balinese traditions that continue to shape everyday life in Ubud. Traditional alang-alang roofs and handcrafted Balinese carvings throughout the resort further reflect the island’s rich cultural heritage.

Environmental Responsibility

Environmental stewardship is a cornerstone of responsible tourism. Since opening in 2005, Viceroy Bali has been designed to harmonise with its natural surroundings, preserving existing vegetation and natural waterways while carefully integrating the resort into the landscape of the Valley of the Kings. This commitment is reflected in an 18-step organic wastewater treatment system that returns clean water to the local river, an 80-metre mountain spring supplying drinkable tap water throughout the property, the use of solar energy to support daily operations, an organic kitchen garden, and a zero-single-use-plastic policy designed to minimise waste and protect the local environment.

Viceroy Bali Strengthens Sustainability Commitment Through Mangrove Plantation with Bendega

Viceroy Bali Strengthens Sustainability Commitment Through Mangrove Plantation with Bendega

Ubud, Bali – 5 March 2026 – As part of its ongoing commitment to responsible hospitalityand environmental stewardship,
Viceroy Bali partnered with Bendega to support mangrove restoration through a tree planting initiative held on
10 February 2026 at 7:00 AM in Kedonganan, Bali.

Biodiversity Program Mangrove Plantation

During the activity, the Viceroy Bali team joined hands with Bendega to plant 100 mangrove trees along the coastal area. The initiative forms part of the hotel’s broader sustainability programme, reinforcing its dedication to protecting natural ecosystems while contributing to the wellbeing of local communities.

Bendega is an Indonesian startup focused on strengthening and utilising mangrove ecosystems while improving the livelihoods of fishermen. By combining environmental conservation with technology, Bendega supports sustainable coastal management, increases fishermen’s income potential, and empowers local small businesses connected to the mangrove ecosystem.

Mangrove forests are among the most powerful natural climate solutions. They absorb and store significantly more carbon than terrestrial forests, helping mitigate climate change. In addition, mangroves protect coastlines from erosion, provide vital habitats for marine biodiversity, and support the livelihoods of coastal communities by nurturing fish populations and other marine life.

Through the planting of these 100 trees, Viceroy Bali aims to contribute to the long-term restoration of Bali’s coastal ecosystems. The initiative reflects the hotel’s belief that luxury hospitality can and should coexist with responsible environmental practices.

“At Viceroy Bali, sustainability is not simply a concept but an ongoing commitment,” said Mr. Jero Mangku Tindih, Resort Manager of Viceroy Bali. “By partnering with organisations such as Bendega, we hope to contribute to meaningful environmental impact while supporting the communities who depend on these ecosystems.”

The mangrove plantation initiative aligns with Viceroy Bali’s broader sustainability goals, which include supporting local environmental conservation efforts, collaborating with community driven initiatives, and encouraging team participation in activities that create positive ecological impact.

By taking part in hands-on conservation efforts such as mangrove restoration, Viceroy Bali continues to reinforce its vision of responsible luxury, where protecting the natural beauty of Bali is an essential part of the guest experience and the hotel’s long term commitment to the island.

Viceroy Bali Marks 20 Years of Timeless Luxury with a Series of Celebratory Events

Viceroy Bali Marks 20 Years of Timeless Luxury with a Series of Celebratory Events

Ubud, Bali | September 2025 – Viceroy Bali, the family-owned luxury resort nestled in Ubud’s Valley of the Kings, proudly marks its 20th anniversary this September with a series of events honouring two decades of heartfelt hospitality, exceptional service and enduring partnerships.

The resort’s name, Viceroy, was chosen to symbolise leadership and majesty, reflecting its setting in Ubud’s sacred “Valley of the Kings”. The resort was born from a vision to create a sanctuary that blends timeless luxury with Balinese spirit, a place to honour its regal surroundings with beauty, culture and heartfelt hospitality.

Viceroy Bali - The 20th Anniversary Press Release Sept2025

The anniversary month commenced with community initiatives and internal celebrations, beginning with a blood donation drive and a team outing, dedicated to recognising and celebrating the people who have been the heart of Viceroy Bali. Remarkably, 29 employees have been with the resort since its opening in 2005, while a further 86 team members have served for more than a decade, many developing their careers within the Viceroy family.

On 12 September 2025, the resort hosted an elegant Gala Dinner at Apéritif Restaurant, welcoming 120 distinguished guests, including long-standing partners, travel agents, media, family, suppliers and members of the Ubud Palace royal family and local Government. The evening began with a cultural performance at the resort’s main infinity pool, featuring dancers who, like many of the resort’s team, have been part of the Viceroy story for many years. Guests were then treated to a specially curated four-course anniversary degustation menu, accompanied by heartfelt speeches and anecdotes from the Owners.

As part of the celebrations, Viceroy Bali also partnered with the Bali Children’s Project, contributing to its mission of providing education and opportunities for underprivileged Balinese children. Guests were invited to join in supporting this important cause during the evening, reinforcing the resort’s commitment to giving back to the community that has been its home for two decades.

The celebration continued into the night with the after party at Pinstripe Bar, where more guests gathered to enjoy crafted cocktails, live music and a warm atmosphere of togetherness, reinforcing the strong community that has flourished around Viceroy Bali.

Further highlighting the resort’s values of loyalty and appreciation, a Team Awarding Ceremony took place on 18 September, recognising dedication and excellence across departments. The month will conclude with a charity visit to a local orphanage, underscoring Viceroy Bali’s deeprooted commitment to giving back and supporting its local community. The celebrations also pay tribute to loyal guests who have returned year after year, many of whom have become part of the extended Viceroy family.

To share this milestone with travellers, Viceroy Bali has introduced a 20th Anniversary Celebration Offer. Guests staying a minimum of three nights may select a unique gift each day of their stay from the “20 Treasures Box”, featuring experiences and keepsakes that embody the spirit of the resort’s luxury and discovery.

“Over the past 20 years, Viceroy Bali has grown not only as a sanctuary for discerning travellers but also as a family with enduring ties to Ubud and Bali’s cultural heritage,” said Anthony and Amanda Syrowatka, owners of Viceroy Bali. “These celebrations are as much about our guests and partners as they are about our team and community, who have been instrumental in shaping our journey.”

Looking ahead, Viceroy Bali remains committed to delivering timeless luxury experiences whilst embracing sustainable growth and community connection.

*Update May 2021 – our entire team received their second vaccination on 24 May 2021. You can reserve your villa at Viceroy Bali with peace of mind by clicking here.

The COVID-19 pandemic has dragged Indonesian into serious public health and economic crisis. Tourism has been one of the worst segments affected by the impact of the pandemic, including tourism in Bali. Since the country recorded its first confirmed cases on 2 March 2020, the Indonesian government has been determined to protect everyone from COVID-19 and has started rolling out a nationwide vaccination program to stop the spread of influenza in 2021.

The Indonesia President, Joko Widodo (Jokowi) reviewed the implementation of the COVID-19 vaccination campaign in Ubud, at Puri Agung District Bali province on 16 March 2021, and said he was optimistic that giving free access to the coronavirus vaccinations for bali would help revive the tourism industry on the island. The Government on the other hand is expecting a full vaccine distribution across Bali by the end of July and is aiming to make sure that all the vaccines are sustainable and allocated fairly.

Accompanied by Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin, Tourism and Creative Economic Minister Sandiaga Uno and Bali Governor Wayan Koster, Jokowi held dialogues with Balinese religious groups and communities as well as the frontline public servants to ensure that the vaccination program is implemented properly and successfully, as it is the key for the revival of tourism in Bali. He also mentioned the reopening of three COVID-19 green zones in Bali for tourism amid a marked decrease in the number of daily coronavirus cases nationwide.

“I see that in the province of Bali, we want to concentrate on three designated green zones, specifically Ubud, Sanur, and Nusa Dua. We are optimistic of these becoming green zones, green areas that we can fully open to tourists, hence later tourists will feel safe and comfortable staying in Bali. With our focus on these three zones, the revival of the tourism sector Bali province will start” he remarked.

As mentioned on Tempo News, the Ministry of Tourism and the Creative Economy of Indonesia, Sandiaga Uno mentioned that three tourism destinations in Bali including Ubud, Sanur, and Nusa Dua will be officially open on 17 August 2021; right on the same day of Indonesia Independence Day.

Viceroy Bali was the First Luxury Resort in Ubud to get Their Staff Vaccinated

Viceroy Bali employee’s getting the Vaccination.

While hotels need to ensure limited interactions between employees and guests, prioritizing employees with free access to the vaccine would ensure a high level of protection and comfort. On Friday, 26 March 2021 the award-winning hotel Viceroy Bali staff received their first COVID-19 vaccination provided by the government, at Banjar Nagi, Ubud.

This clearly marks the grand breakthrough as Viceroy Bali is wasting no time to ensure the health and safety protocols across the resort, while at the same time, still delivering the best hospitality services in Ubud.

Though there are numerous options of vaccines out on the market, the government has provided Astra-Zeneca to all the Viceroy Bali staff registered in Ubud. The vaccinations for Bali is not only distributed to the local employees, but the expats including the General Manager of Viceroy Bali, Amanda Syrowatka, proving to everyone why Viceroy Bali is a dynamic and agile hospitality operator when it comes to adapting to new situations like the pandemic.

Located in a secluded area of Ubud, a mysterious yet blinding haven lies above the green valley of the jungle. Viceroy Bali is also home to world-famous restaurants and bars: Aperitif and Cascades.

Viceroy Bali Staff Vaccinated

Viceroy Bali welcomes you under safety regulations.

Both of the restaurants are complemented with Ubud’s magnificent panorama jungle view alongside the beautiful Petanu river. Aside from having a great reputation, Viceroy Bali also has shown a serious response to adapt to the situation, prioritizing the safety of every staff member. Therefore, they are scheduled to receive their second vaccination in May 2021.

As stated by ABC news, travelling guests are required to be vaccinated upon arrival in Bali in 2021 and can come back to Bali safely if the respective person can return with a negative test.

If you are still dreaming of the tropical retreat during the pandemic, worry not, Viceroy Bali is verified with Clean, Health, Security & Environment (CHSE).
