Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence, marks the beginning of the Balinese Saka New Year. Observed the day after the new moon in March, this sacred day invites reflection, renewal, and harmony.
The silence begins with the vibrant Pengerupukan, or Ogoh Ogoh parade, held during the Mecaru ceremony. Towering mythical figures representing Bhuta Kala, symbolic forces of negative energy, are carried through the streets before being burned at the end of the procession. The ritual represents purification and the release of negative energy.
Then, as Nyepi begins, Bali comes to a complete standstill for 24 hours. Lights are dimmed, music and noise cease, transportation stops, and people remain at home. With the island resting in stillness, Nyepi offers a rare opportunity to slow down, reconnect with loved ones, reflect within, and allow nature to rest and renew.
