Ubud is known internationally as the artistic and cultural heart of Bali. Ubud is also home to Bali's first private museum of Balinese art, the Musuem Puri Lukisan.
The museum was established in 1965 by Tkokorda Gde Agung Sukawati (a Prince of Ubud who lived until 1978) to house and showcase traditional Balinese art by talented Balinese artists. The building was designed by Dutch painter Rudolf Bonnet, who became the first curator of the museum.
