Understanding Indonesian Textiles
Having trouble telling the difference between batik and ikat textiles? Clear the confusion with an introductory class on Indonesian textiles.
Conducted at the Threads of Life Gallery in central Ubud, you will be brought on fascinating journey of different cultures and regions through understanding the textiles unique to each location.
At the end of the 90-minute session, you will be able to differentiate between batik, ikat and other weaves. Additionally, you will gain insight about handspun and commercially produced threads; and natural dyes, which are safer; and backstrap and mechanical loom weaving. Rounding up the session is a look at the use of textiles in rituals and as symbolic cloths on the islands of Bali and Nusa Tenggara.
