Marking Nyepi in Bali

The annual Balinese Day of Silence falls on March 16 this year. It marks the first day of the Lunar New Year in the religious Hindu calendar, called Nyepi.

From 6am, Balinese-Hindus observe this day in silence with fasting and medition within their home, until 6am the following day. On this day, there is to be no travelling; no entertainment, pleasure or working; and no lighting of fire, lamps or lights.

Exceptions to these are emergency vehicles transporting patients with life-threatening conditions or a pregnant female who is in labour; and a 5 watt light source in abodes where there are elderly, pregnant women or infants. Even the airport ceases operation for this day.

There are a series of other observances and ceremonies in the days before and after Nyepi. For more information, refer to this Wikipedia article: Nyepi. The Jakarta Post also carried a descriptive article about Nyepi in their March 5 2008 edition.

Although a Hindu holiday, non-Balinese and tourists also observe the day as a mark of respect for the Balinese. Guests can do as they wish within the premises of their hotel.

Guests staying at the Viceroy Bali have access to all facilities and services available: complimentary Internet connection; library of books and movies; air-conditioned gymnasium; Lembah spa facilities including in-room massages; in-room dining or meals at CasCades Restaurant; and the common pool.
